Tell The Difference Between Men's Blazers And Suit Jacket

When it is time to dress up for a particular gathering or occasion, it is better to recognize what to wear. For men, a suit and blazer are usually an option. There is a difference between a suit and a blazer, so be mindful when dressing or preparing for that occasion. Many men are confused when it comes to differentiating
between a blazer and a suit jacket. New fashions in blazers and suit jackets are limitless but these two are different when it comes to attribute and uses.

Suit Jacket
Suit jackets always come with a matching pair of trousers and sometimes a waistcoat (same colour and cloth material). When it comes with a pair of trousers, it is categorized as two piece suits. Three piece suits on the other hand include the waistcoat. Designs are sometimes single or double breasted (meaning they have one or two rows of buttons) which determines the garments suitability, be it business or formal occasion.
Young men now wear suit jacket with a pair of jeans which I will not recommend as it doesn’t present the sophisticated look that the suit jacket was meant to convey. Also the suit jacket colour will start to fade (compared to the trousers) if you keep pairing your suit jacket with a jeans.
A blazer is just a smart suit style jacket cut more casually with no matching trousers, typically with gold, silver, ivory or metal buttons.
Blazers are worn for smart casual events. Unlike suit jackets they can be worn with variety of different other clothes; a polo shirt, a plain shirt with tie like suits, even a T-shirt if you are going for a casual but polished look. Jeans do make an excellent companion with a great blazer. They can also be single or double breasted.
Blazers are similar to sport coat or jacket (I prefer jacket) but are generally distinguished from sport jackets as a more formal garment tailored from solid colour fabrics with metal buttons and often have patch pockets.
Final Words

Suit jackets are more formal and give a man the look of authority and power while a blazer allows a man to lit up the style in his personality.
A suit jacket is a suit jacket. What if the jacket has no matching trousers? Then it must be a blazer or a sport jacket. Unless it has metal buttons, patch pockets and made from solid colour fabrics. Then it’s a blazer!

  1. nice one here but i strongly disagree with the metal button you used in distinguishing the blazers. i stand to be corrected though! Are there no blazers with plastic buttons? and from what i can also deduce from this literature is that any jacket without a matching trousers is a blazer, i would need a reference for this if you don't mind. Anyways its still a nice write-up. Kudos!

    1. Thank you for your comment Ademola. On the metal buttons on blazers, it is not a criteria but it adds more to the beauty of jacket. True, there are blazers with plastic buttons but with metal buttons you will surely stand out. This piece was written with the intention of features you should look out for when willing to purchase one. That way you can always look different from the next guy.

And YES! any jacket without a trouser is a blazer. A two piece suit is a jacket with a matching trouser of the same material and pattern likewise 3 piece suit. A blazer is just the jacket with no matching trouser, you are to figure out whatever to pair it with.
